Earth moves for seismic students
Students at Central Sussex College in Haywards Heath have detected seismic activity from the Icelandic volcano and the massive earthquakes in Chile and Haiti thousands of miles away.
They have been using a seismometer to take readings of seismic activity across the world and their data, in a global monitoring process, is helping the British Geological Society to locate the position of earthquakes.
Mathematics and Physics teacher Deanna Nicholson with her colleague, Geography and Geology teacher Helen Hore, set up a 'Quake Club' at the college and when the Chile quake struck in February the needle on the seismometer jumped off the scale with the after-shocks going on for hours.
Deanna said the 'Quake Club' had helped to enrich the students' scientific studies
