Remembrance Sunday was a special day for Ellen Pannett who laid a wreath in memory of her great-great grandfather, Herbert Hilborn. Herbert’s name is on Wivelsfield Green’s war memorial and Rev Christopher Breeds, the vicar of St Peter and St John the Baptist Church, invited Ellen to lay a wreath on behalf of the village. Ellen, a pupil at Wivelsfield County Primary School, brought along a picture of Herbert, which made Sunday’s ceremony all the more poignant. Herbert was conscripted during the Great War and died leaving his widow to bring up four young children.
