Engineers start work at busy junction in Ore
Work has finally started at a major junction in Ore.
Engineers were out in force on Wednesday to reprogramme the traffic lights at the junction in Old London Road.
Residents there have blasted the road as a death trap.
They said many were too afraid to cross Old London Road due to heavy traffic and a lack of pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.
The junction meets with Mount Pleasant Road, Frederick Road, Mount Road and High Bank and is known as the Sussex Arms junction.
When the traffic lights were switched on in early May huge traffic queues backed up on the road system around the junction as there were too many for cars to cope with. They were then switched off and engineers went back to the drawing board.
A spokesman for regeneration company Sea Space said: "The works include new and amended line markings, additional signage, signal cable conduits and reprogramming the signals. They are scheduled to take two weeks.
"We made temporary improvements to the junction with pedestrian crossing islands and a crossing patrol supervisor was on duty during school hours, but we appreciate this has been a difficult time and we'd like to thank residents for their patience.
"The junction will provide a better balance between vehicles and pedestrians using the junction and make the junction a much safer place for pedestrians to cross."
