A postbox in Haywards Heath which fell down on April 20, was replaced this morning (August 13) after a petition with more than 200 signatures.

Royal Mail was encouraged to speed up with the replacement of the box on the edge of Ashenground and Sheppeys by the town council and local residents.

John Burke, who lives only yards from the box, started the petition about two weeks ago and took it to all the local residents to get it signed.

He said: “In view of what happened at Ansty, where a brick post- box just vanished, it is only the mobilising of public opinion and coverage in the local and national media that got a replacement.

“It is a pity that the 1956 box has gone, but the new one has a wider slit for large letters.”
