Family targetted by firework yobs

A family are living in fear after yobs put a firework through their letterbox -and are now threatening to do the same to neighbours.

Marilyn Long was watching TV downstairs in her privately-rented house in St Andrew's Square, Hastings, at around 10pm Tuesday, October 23, when she heard a bang.

Not knowing what it was, quick-thinking Miss Long grabbed her mobile phone and made sure children, Saxon Mount pupil Holly Jarmin, 13, and Hastings College student Caroline Jarmin, 16, and partner Ronald Jarmin were safe.

"I jumped up and got hold of my phone and I phoned the fire brigade. I was really frightened.

"Holly was really scared.

"My sister has offered for me to go and stay at her house, but the police said I would be leaving the house empty."

Youths have been making Miss Long and her family's life a misery for the last two months.

She thinks they are former friends of her son, who she did not want to name as he is in foster-care, who he owed money to.

"I've sorted that out now," Miss Long said. "But I can't take anymore of this."

Police and fire crews were at the scene at 10.30pm on Tuesday, October 23, after the fire set alight the front door and curtains.

Miss Long's landlord is now in the process of repairing the damage.

Fire station commander Mark Webb said that two fire engines attended the blaze. He said: "Four people were led to safety. There were no injuries as far as I am aware.

"The door area was affected by the fire."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the house Fire. They are trying to identify two youths wearing hooded tops that were seen to leave the area on bikes at around the time of the incident, and may have information that could assist with their enquires.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 1636 of the 23/10/2007.
