Farm fire in Haywards Heath

NINETEEN chickens perished in a fire in a storage building near the Sandrocks estate off Rocky Lane, Haywards Heath.

The blaze broke out at about 1am today (September 8) in a two storey, brick built storage building at Rookery Farm.

Fire station manager at Haywards Heath, Ian Walker, said: " It was quite dramatic. When we arrived the timber tiled roof and first floor were 100 per cent alight and the fire was spreading to the ground floor.

"When we opened the door a chicken walked unharmed but 19 perished. It was too dangerous to go into the building but we managed to save a landrover which was pulled from the building using the farmer's tractor."

Fire officers from Haywards Heath were assisted by officers from Burgess Hill and Horsham and finally left the scene at 4am.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
