The new Bedford Cup was contested by surprise finalists at Hurstpierpoint on Saturday.
The cup, which is a successor to the Married Couples Cup was run on a handicap basis. Pairs who were both league players started each game against a non team pair at 0-30, or 0-15 against a pair with one league player.
Rank outsiders Ghodrat Kalani and Cath Abbott took full advantage of a 30-0 start to go unbeaten through the five-matche pool stage, including beating a first team pair.
In the final they played husband and wife pair Rod and Ali Price, who suffered only one pool defeat from a 0-15 start.
The Prices used their greater competitive experience to win 6-2.
Despite a gloomy forecast, the weather improved and an enjoyable Finals Day at Cuckfield took place.
The preliminary rounds started in May and there were six trophies up for grabs.
The usual excellent tea and refreshments rounded off the best Finals Day for a long time.
Winners were - Ladies singles: Clare Salimbeni; Men’s Singles: Will Phillips; Men’s Doubles: Will and Anthony Phillips; Mixed Doubles: Sheryl and Martin Shoesmith; Handicapped Mixed Doubles: Sarah Fricker and Anthony Phillips; Ladies Doubles: Jany Phillips and Barbara Paul.
