Year 5 children from Southway Junior School were recently visited by the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and were taught about fire safety through the ‘R U safe’ programme. The children learnt about the dangers and characteristics of fire, fire safety in the home, escape plans and Get out Stay out call the Fire Service out. Through the use of role play the children discussed three scenarios – a car crash, a house fire and a school fire alarm and they had to decide which emergency the fire service should attend first. The children learnt some vital life skills and they found the fire safety officer very entertaining.
One child said, “The fire talk was amazing, I learnt a lot about fire and also what would happen if a fire engine got stuck in traffic!” Another felt that “The fireman was fun and he made sure he answered everyone’s questions, we also got involved in role play and had to decide which problem to go to first”
One thing is for certain, the children’s interests were ‘sparked ‘by the visit!
