Mid Sussex District Council is inviting families to enjoy some free games, sports, art and competitions as part of Play Day 2014.
The vintage Victorian theme play day events will be held at:
• Victoria Park in Haywards Heath from 12pm until 4pm on Tuesday 5 August
• St John’s Park in Burgess Hill from 12pm until 4pm on Wednesday 6 August
• King Georges Field in East Grinstead from 12pm until 4pm on Thursday 7 August
Local children will have the chance to take part in an antique treasure hunt that involves sounds, projections and old games and songs.
Under-8s will be eligible to enter a vintage (sailors and swimwear themed) fancy dress competition with prizes for the best dressed child, and best dressed adult and child pairing.
Young children will also have the chance to pose for a Victorian Portrait picture and get their faces painted.
There will also be arts and crafts, cake decorating, and prizes.
There will be traditional track and field games with children taking part in egg and spoon, sack and skipping races, hoop and stick games, racing hobby horses, a tug of war, a marble run, a giant noughts and crosses game, skittles and the chance to play on stilts.
Youngsters can practice their circus skills with tightrope walking, staff juggling and poi, a performance art that involves swinging tethered weights to form a variety of patterns.
“We’re joining together with hundreds of other community events across the UK to celebrate Play Day 2014,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “We have organised a fantastic range of activates for local children this year and because we have an event in each town, you’ll never be too far away from the fun.
“If you’re stuck for things to do with the kids this summer then why not come along, it’s always tremendous fun and the children have a whale of a time. All the events are free of charge so I hope lots of local families will join us on the day for what is set to be a great event.”
Play Day is a celebration of children’s right to play and a campaign to highlight the importance of play in children’s lives.
The 2014 events have been organised by Mid Sussex District Council with support from Burgess Hill Town Council, Haywards Heath Town Council, Affinity Sutton Housing Association, Haywards Heath and District Lions, Creative Across Sussex and local businesses.
