Glider Man Flies Jet
A HASTINGS glider pilot is poised to fly a giant 'Triple Seven' jetliner around the world from Australia - without ever having had a flying lesson in an engined aircraft.
Dan Tirel will follow all the civil aviation rules and regulations and cruise in the 200 million Boeing 777 aircraft at 20,000 feet along with Rock Legend Bruce Dickinson, the front man of heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
But the 40,000 mile flight on Sunday, November 4 will be an unusual one because it will never actually leave the ground
The stunt is a long-distance cyber flight by a group of enthusiasts who will fly a Boeing 777 simulator to raise 5,000 for cancer Research UK.
The group, including nine crews from six countries, includes Dan, a 21 year old insurance advisor from Queens Road.
He said: "I am a solo glider pilot and enjoy all manner of flight but flying simulators is my hobby. It should be a great way to make some money for charity."
Dan's progress on the flight can be followed on-line at www.simfest.co.uk where people can also make donations. He has so far raised 110 in sponsorship and this amount can be boosted, before, during or after the simulation.
