Bolney residents have celebrated a ground breaking moment for a million pound project which has been 14 years in the making.

After years of campaigning and fundraising, residents finally felt the earth move under their feet as developers broke ground in Batchelor’s Field to commence building of the new village hall.

The state-of-the-art facility, developed by Cheesmur, is being built at a cost of more than £1million and will take approximately 40 weeks to complete.

Villagers launched a highly successful ‘Buy A Brick’ campaign which has raised more than £25,000, and have held a series of events including ‘Bolney’s Got Talent’ and a Dog Show which raised more than £2,000 each.

The Rawson Hall Management Committee has secured grants, including one of £50,000 from Sport England.

There are now sufficient funds in place to complete the majority of the build, but a shortfall does still exist.

Helen Mullany, of the Rawson Hall Management Committee’s fund raising team, said that villagers are delighted to finally see it happening.

She said: “The existing dilapitated Rawson Hall has been sold for redevelopment, which will fund the majority of the build, and a Public Works Loan of £300,000 has been taken out by the Parish Council.”

Helen said that a team of determined fund raisers have pledged to raise £50,000 to help close the funding gap.

The new Rawson will incorporate new sports changing facilities, a community hall, café and toilet facilities.

The fund raising team are organising a Clay Pigeon Shoot on June 29 from 10.30am at ‘Raggetts’, in Pickwell Lane, Bolney, and a Golf Day. There will be prizes for ‘top shot’, ‘family pair’ and ‘young gun’.The event will include a barbecue and refreshments. The group will also host a golf day in the summer.

The next village hall fundraising meeting will be held on June 24, at 8pm, at Millside, in Cherry lane,
