Harlands Primary School will take part in a race at the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday (July 13).
More than 90 schools and around 1,000 children will be taking part in the annual Greenpower ‘Gathering of Goblins’ - a challenge for junior schools to race electric cars that they have designed and built themselves in school.
Harlands pupils will be taking part for their third year.
Thirty five pupils from the school have been taking part in an after school club to build and learn to drive their car.
Mr Burdass, the teacher who has guided the children as they wielded their spanners, said: “In our first year we came 72nd out of 73 cars at Goodwood and that was only because the car we ‘beat’ had a problem when their wiring caught fire.
“Last year we did so much better and this year we hope to improve again. At the end of the day though, we go to the race in order to enjoy ourselves – which we always do!”
Greenpower is a Fontwell based charity which believes that providing young people with an exciting, real life project is the most successful way of sparking a genuine interest in engineering.
