Huge earthquakes detected by Haywards Heath students
MASSIVE earthquakes thousands of miles away were monitored by a Mid Sussex college that is officially recognised as a recording station for the British Geological Society.
Students based at the 'Quake Club' at Central Sussex College off Harlands Road, Haywards Heath, use a seismometer, which is able to track seismic activity from across the globe.
Since the equipment was installed last August, several strong earthquakes have hit, including the much-documented earthquake in Haiti, which killed about 230,000 people in January, and a massive quake in Chile this February, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale.
Chile's earthquake was so powerful it triggered a reading that was off the scale on the college's seismometer.
Mathematics and Physics teacher Deanna Nicholson, who set up the 'Quake Club' with Georgraphy and Geology teacher Helen Hore, said: "When the Chile quake struck it produced so much energy that it rumbled round the surface of the earth for hours."
