Lifesaving Postman scoops award

Postman Glynn Evans has scooped a Royal Mail hero's award after saving his wife's life when she collapsed at their Lurgashall home.

He is the regional winner of the lst Class People award and the couple travel to London at the end of the month for a special presentation from Christine Bleakley of BBC's One Show as well as the announcement of the national winner.

It was 11 years since Glynn 61, had done his last first aid refresher course, but everything he had learnt came flooding back when Patsy suffered a severe heart attack.

"I could see she wasn't breathing and there was no pulse and I phoned for an ambulance and a doctor."

With the help of his son Aaron he lifted Patsy on to the floor and started cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

He continued for eight minutes while an officer at ambulance control kept talking to him over the phone.

"I did not have to think, I just knew what to do," Glynn said.

"Every now and then Patsy gave a low gasp. I just kept going until the doctor arrived."

Patsy was airlifted to hospital in Brighton where she underwent emergency surgery.

And to the astonishment of her family, she made a rapid recovery and in less than three months was back at work in Midhurst where she has a cleaning job at Midhurst Rother College.

"I think everyone should do basic first aid training because you just never know when you'll need it. It saved Patsy's life. There is no way she would have come back without it," said Glynn, who is a postman at Haslemere.

He learnt first aid when he was working for RMC at the sandpit at Pendean and was then sent on update courses every two years.
