Lightning-struck school set to re-open

A school struck by lightning during Tuesday's storms is to re-open on Monday.

Part of the electrical system at St Paul's Primary School in St Leonards was damaged by the strike, including the fire alarm.

The school has since been closed while engineers repair the damage and check electrical installations and appliances.

Karen Bye, senior advisory head teacher, said: "Obviously our priority has to be the safety and welfare of our students. Every single piece of electrical equipment and every circuit is having to be checked to make sure it is absolutely safe. Clearly we are not able to reopen the school for pupils until we are satisfied everything is safe.

"We understand the frustrations of parents and would ask them to remain patient whilst essential work is carried out. Because of the lack of power we have been unable to communicate with parents, through our website or phone system, as effectively as we would have liked."
