Love not war, 70 years on for couple
Platinum wedding Joan and Frank Haworth
Veteran Royal Artillery gunner Frank Haworth has bitter-sweet memories of wartime.
He served during the Second World War but also met and married his sweetheart, Joan, and, 70 years on, their love is still running true.
Joan and Frank were married on March 15, 1943, and celebrate their Platinum wedding anniversary tomorrow after 70 happy years together.
Frank was 23 when he wed Joan, who was a tender 20 years old. The couple have lived most of their life together in Brighton, latterly in Woodingdean, but moved to St Augustine’s Close, Scaynes Hill, a year ago to be close to their only daughter, Christine, who lives in Hill Crest Lane.
Their anniversary celebrations will also be joined by Christine’s daughter, Charlotte Goddard and her three children - ninety-year-old Joan’s and 93-year-old Frank’s grand-daughter and three great-grandchildren.
Christine, who has lived in Scaynes Hill for 23 years, said: “I imagine they must have had their ups and downs, like everyone does, but nothing serious. They have just had a very happy life together and looked after each other.”
