Major rail disruption due to ice

Snow falling at Hassocks Station over the weekend

Snow falling at Hassocks Station over the weekend

Commuters to London are facing major disruption this morning because engineering works between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges delayed the work of de-icers on the line.

Some trains were getting through but most services were cancelled during the early morning peak and Southern called in replacement buses, which took a while to arrive.

Trains that were getting through, faced delays of up to 60 minutes.

By 7.30am, replacement buses had not arrived at Haywards Heath station and commuters gathered round the information boards which had a list of cancellations.

One Hassocks commuter who was given a lift by car to Haywards Heath to try to catch a train or bus from there, said: “I’m very disappointed, especially when the roads are pretty good but sadly, not surprised.”
A commuter who had a slippery walk up Station Approach to Hassocks station, only to find there were no trains, said: “Why can’t Network Rail pay a piffling amount to the council to grit Station Approach. It’s lethal, especially for older people?”

Commuter Stephen Jones, who managed to catch one of the few trains leaving Haywards Heath before 7.30am said: “The roads are fine. This kind of rail disruption happens every year in the snow. Engineering works prevented de-icing of the track and replacement buses were late to arrive.”
