Man dies on rail line at Burgess Hill

A man from Haywards Heath died after being struck by a train at Burgess Hill.

British Transport Police this morning confirmed information given to the Mid Sussex Times about the incident last night.

A spokesman said: “Officers attended the line near Valebridge Road in Burgess Hill, north of Wivelsfield rail station, just before 8.40pm on Sunday, 23 September after a man was struck by a train.

“BTP attended along with Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service but the man, believed to be a 59-year-old from Haywards Heath, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

Neighbours at the spot first realised their was a serious incident when police cars and ambulances arrived at the Wivelsfield Station area in the middle of the evening.

Train services were delayed while the 999 services dealt with the incident, but were restored in time for today’s rush hour.
