Marathon trio are backing local charity

A NEW Mid Sussex based charity trying to get support to cancer patients is hoping to spread its message with the help of three athletes and a wedding party.

Friends Chris Williams, from Hassocks, and Suzi Hill and Sam Haffenden, from Haywards Heath, are running in the Rome Marathon to raise money for the organisation Cancer Journey.

And Sam agreed to feature her running T-shirt at her reception at South Lodge after marrying Jason Ferguson on Saturday, February 14.

The plan was to put the shirt on a board with sponsorship details and a competition to guess the length of Jason's speech. The winner's name will be printed on the T-shirt.

Sam got hitched to the marathon idea through her friendship with Chris, a fitness instructor who runs a class at Warden Park School in Cuckfield, who in turn is a friend of Cancer Journey founder Jane Gumbrill.

Jane, a theatre nurse from Cuckfield, started the 'signposting' service to help people diagnosed with cancer and their families find information, help and advice, after watching her brother Jeremy battle prostate cancer for seven years.

She launched Cancer Journey in 2007 and unveiled its unique telephone and web-based information and support service last November.

Sponsor Sam, Suzi or Chris in the Rome Mararthon, which takes place over the weekend of March 21/22, at www.cancerjourney.org.uk or email info@cancerjourney.org.uk. Its helpline number is 0303 333 000 3.
