Leading South East farmer Michael Lambert has been re-elected as Chairman of the South of England Agricultural Society.
His re-election came at the Society’s annual general meeting, held at the South of England Showground in Ardingly on March 20.
Michael Lambert (pictured second from left), who manages farms in Surrey and Somerset, is also Secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth, working closely with HRH Princess Anne, and has supported the Society for many years.
His farming expertise spans decades, from training at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, to managing farms including arable, animal husbandry and commercial woodland.
In the 1980s, he was Chairman of the Farmer Adopt a School Scheme, which was the first project to lead to the South of England Society developing an educational programme which supports many thousands of young people in the region to learn more about agriculture and rural career opportunities, as well as providing bursaries and opportunities for advancement to students in countryside professions.
He said: “I am looking forward to steering the South of England Agricultural Society through an important period of change and modernisation – we’re entering a new era and we need to adapt considerably to be successful in the changing world in which we now live.”
Ian Nicol, CEO of the South of England Agricultural Society said: “Michael’s experience and wisdom is invaluable to the Society, whilst his working knowledge and expertise in farming will contribute greatly to the Society’s year of horticulture.”
At the meeting, out-going President and actress Dame Penelope Keith DBE DL along with her Vice-President, Sarah Peay, received silver salvers for their service to the Society and were commended for their hard work over the past year, whilst new President, Lord Egremont of the Petworth Estate in West Sussex, was welcomed by Society members.
Reviewing the past year, members noted increased numbers in visitors to the Society’s major shows last year, which include the Spring Garden and Leisure Show, the South of England Show, the Autumn Show and Game Fair and the Festive Food and Drink Fayre.
