Mid Sussex choir tour called off

COLLEGE bosses have spoken of their disappointment after the visit of a popular African children's choir to Mid Sussex next weekend was been called off after organisers were hit by an unexpected visa snag abroad.

The 20-strong Pearl of Africa Children's Choir from Uganda was due to appear at Hurstpierpoint College on Friday evening (September 19), at the Brighthelm Centre in Brighton on Saturday, and at the United Reform Church in Haywards Heath on Sunday, as part of a national tour to raise funds for nearly 3,000 poor and orphaned children from the Molly and Paul Childcare Foundation.

All the children in this choir come from what the organisers call a 'background of unbelievable hardship' and many of the youngsters have been made orphans by AIDS and malaria. The choir's UK Tour is the single most important fundraising activity for the foundation, and organisers say it is no exaggeration to say that it can make the difference between life and death for some of the children in their care.

But UK officials in Uganda have refused visas for under-18s in the group despite earlier assurances by the Criminal Record Bureau in the UK that the tour arrangements were satisfactory.

Organisers have postponed the present tour and are hoping that it can take place later in the year if the problems can be overcome.
