Midhurst school to get two temporary classrooms

TWO temporary classrooms are to be built at Midhurst Intermediate School in Easebourne to cope with the arrival of Years 7 and 8 children from Herbert Shiner School in September.

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has applied for planning permission to build the double classroom after the decision to move the pupils, in the wake of recruitment problems at the Petworth school.

Following the recruitment difficulties for the start of the new academic year in September, the school's governing body decided to move the top two years to Easebourne and parents were advised of the move in May.

Making the planning application to Chichester District Council, WSCC capital programme manager Graham Olway said: "The two schools have been working closely together to support the transfer of the Herbert Shiner pupils, staff and function to Midhurst Intermediate school in September.

"In January next year the two schools will become part of the wider reorganisation of secondary provision in the Rother Valley and form part of the new Academy School arrangements."

He added: "The influx of Herbert Shiner pupils will therefore require the urgent provision of additional accommodation at Midhurst Intermediate School and this is proposed to be in two temporary classrooms until the long-term accommodation requirements for the academy are confirmed."

He said 20 staff from Herbert Shiner school would also transfer with Petworth's Year 7 and 8 pupils.

It is now known WSCC's preferred site for the new academy, to be called Midhurst Rother Academy, is on Midhurst Grammar School land, but detailed feasibility studies are still being carried out.

West Sussex County Council hopes the new school will be completed in 2011.
