Mid Sussex Hockey Club 2nd team retained the annual Paddy Henry memorial trophy but it was close against local rivals St Francis.
The outcome was decided on the new penalty format where the attacker has 10 seconds to try to score.
Mids led 1-0 to a Ryan Manger goal at the end of a first half in which they lost valiant skipper Jason Morgan with a badly cut eye.
Mids had numerous chances after the break but failed to take any of them and two late goals looked giving Saints victory until Jason Fitzpatrick came up with a last-gasp equaliser.
That brought the penalty shootout, with Seb Gordon, Ryan Manger and Mike Dovey, together with keeper Adam Carter, ensuring Mids triumphed.
