MP steps up post office campaign

NICHOLAS Soames has stepped up his campaign to save rural post offices.

The MP for Mid Sussex has asked two leading authorities to provide detailed evidence of the vital role post offices play in the community.

He said: "I call on the district and county councils to put forward a really vigorous and strong case that highlights the absolute necessity of retaining the network in Mid Sussex.

"Post offices are a vital part of the social architecture of our community; great harm has already been done by the Government to the network and considerable inconvenience caused to people in Mid Sussex.

"From all over my constituency I have complaints from people who are having to queue for an unacceptable length of time – this suffering and gross inconvenience is as a result of earlier closures."

Mr Soames is submitting evidence to the Business and Enterprise Select Committee in the House of Commons which is looking at the range of services that are to be offered through the post office network.
