Central Sussex College Haywards Heath Campus - the new 30m building

Construction work on the second phase of Central Sussex College’s rebuilt Sixth Form Haywards Heath site is nearing completion.

Students and staff are now close to being able to occupy and enjoy their new buildings in total and reap the rewards of the £30m spend.

The first phase of work included a block of new classrooms and The Hub theatre with its ajoining performing arts studios. The Hub is now established as a venue of choice for amateur and professional companies in Mid Sussex.

Consturction work on the second phase began in 2011 and the buildings (pictured above) can now be seen clearly as construction work moves further away.

The college campus in Turners Mill Road is also celebrating six offers of Oxbridge places for students taking their A Level exams this year.

The offers were split equally between Oxford and Cambridge and were for degree places ranging from modern languages to medicine.

All of this year’s successful students participated in the ‘Able and Talented’ programme at the Sixth Form Haywards Heath. The programme identifies academically able students and offers them a varied array of opportunities during their time at the college.

The college says these range from visits to Oxford and Cambridge to extension classes and preparation for entrance tests and interviews.

It says the able and talented programme has gone from strength to strength in recent years and allows students to study for the Cambridge Pre-U award alongside their other A Level subjects.

The Pre-U enables them to further develop their knowledge and potential within a chosen subject area and gives them an edge when applying to study at a top university.

The award is recognised and accepted by all universities in the UK and universities in the United States, including all Ivy League universities.

Dr David Towsey, Able and Talented Co-ordinator at Central Sussex College’s sixth form, said: “This year’s very

pleasing results are a testament to the way in which these students have seized hold of the opportunities we have been able to give them.

“We are currently repeating our scheme with an even bigger extension programme which will include a visiting masterclass run by academics from Oxford and Cambridge and are looking forward to even more success.”
