Sheddingdean Primary School celebrated its official playing field opening on Friday.
Parents and officials packed out the school’s playground and were entertained by a colourful procession of children.
Pupils performed their ‘school field rap’ and attendees took part in Maypole Dancing, Morris Dancing, a skipping contest, tug of war and an assault course.
Headteacher Yasmin Ashraf said: “We have great plans now that we are the proud owners of this extra learning space. We are considering creating a wild area within the additional space which will provide a valuable resource for Forest School and nature studies.”
Sir Nicholas Soames, and the Mayor of Burgess Hill, Anne Jones, closed the event and thanked individuals and organisations who had made the field a reality as they had battled for 20 years to acquire a piece of green land which lay adjacent to the school.
