New college plans solar so good

SOLAR power will bring a warm welcome to a Haywards Heath school's £10 million move to Burgess Hill.

St Paul's Catholic College has won Government backing for a solar-powered energy system at its new home.

The college will use three small solar power systems to teach pupils about renewable energy at the new site near Jane Murray Way, Burgess Hill.

The grant of 55,247 is the second financial boost announced in the past month for the 40-year-old college, which recently was awarded Government funding towards the new 30-acre site.

The school scooped one of eight funding projects from the Department of Trade and Industry for the scheme under what is known as the Major Photovoltaic Demonstration Programme.

Its scheme was praised by Minister for Energy Brian Wilson who said: "Solar power is turning into a real energy source for the UK. There are now a whole range of buildings, from leisure centres and schools to business parks and modern flats which have the new high tech photovoltaic roofs."

The move will also be paid for by the sale of the existing school site, which school governors say is too small to meet a 21st century timetable.

The existing eight and half acre school site is expected to be sold for housing.

It is already earmarked as a "brownfield", or previously developed, site favoured by planners.

Under the funding arrangements the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton and the school's governors have to find ten per cent of the eventual cost.

The new school will have a sixth form centre and one of the biggest improvements will be much bigger playing fields and outdoor sports facilities.

The school's move from Oathall Road in Haywards Heath already has planning approval and work is expected to start at the end of March, with the school opening in September 2004.
