The NHS has appointed a Territorial Army Major to help veterans

EXTRA steps have been taken by the NHS in Sussex to support the needs of veterans and those serving in the armed forces.

A new armed forces mental health lead has been appointed who will be working with staff in Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the dedicated Sussex Armed Forces Health Network to improve services and ensure that veterans and their families receive the right healthcare treatment.

The new post holder, Andy Stubbs, has a military background and has already been working hard to raise awareness of the needs of those who have served in the armed forces.

Andy, a mental health nurse, is based in Sussex Partnership but also works as a Territorial Army major in 306 Hospital Support Medical Regiment as a mental health nursing officer and has previously served in Afghanistan.

As well as raising awareness of the mental health needs of veterans and signposting to the most appropriate services, Andy will also be providing general awareness training for mental health staff and specialist training for armed forces champions in Sussex Partnership as well as in various organisations across Sussex.

He will be the main point of contact and the link between the NHS, the military and the voluntary sector for mental health issues.

Dr Nick Lake, clinical director and armed forces clinical lead in Sussex Partnership, said: “Andy’s experience as both a clinician in mental health services and as a serving officer in the Territorial Army makes him uniquely qualified for this position.”
