Head Colin Taylor 'devastated' after Ofsted puts Oakmeeds into special measures

Colin Taylor, the head teacher of Oakmeeds Community College is understood to be ‘devastated’ by the school’s latest Ofsted report, which has prompted the chair of governors, David Fry to offer to resign.

The Burgess Hill secondary school has been put into special measures after the schools inspectorate visited in January and rated most areas as inadequate except for behaviour and safety.

Letters have been sent out to parents directing them to the Ofsted website where the report will be published tomorrow (Friday).

Meanwhile, the deputy head at Oakmeeds will be leaving the school in a matter of weeks.

Paul Boxall has been appointed head teacher at Hadlow Rural Community School, Kent.

Mr Boxall will start his new role after the Easter holidays.

Oakmeeds head Mr Taylor said: “On behalf of the whole College community I would like to thank Mr Boxall for his loyal service, hard work and commitment to Oakmeeds since he joined in 2008.

“During the last six years, Mr Boxall has been instrumental in implementing many measures which have led to improved student behaviour at the College including the introduction of the new College uniform.

“The staff and I would like to take this opportunity to wish him good luck and every success in his new employment at Hadlow Community School.”

Guy Nelson joins Oakmeeds as its new deputy head from The Hastings Academy where he has been interim vice principal.

He brings almost 30 years’ teaching experience at a critical time for Oakmeeds Community College which will now be working with another secondary school in West Sussex in light of its ‘inadequate’ rating by Ofsted.
