Pensioner conned by rogue builders

A pensioner was conned by two men claiming to be builders.

The 78-year-old was approached by the men near his home in Cedar Close at around 10.15am on Thursday (June 18) and, after brief discussions, agreed to hire them to carry out some work.

He had not seen the builders before. The man handed over a sum of money as a deposit for the work but the builders left the property, never to return.

Police are now hunting the two men and warning other residents to be on the look out.

One is described as being young, white, in his late 20's, of stocky build, about 5'5ft with short dark brown hair and wearing a blue t shirt.

The second, an older man, was also white, in his 60's, of stocky build, about 5'8ft with grey messy short hair and a messy grey stubble beard. They were driving a white van.

A police spokesman said: "Please remember to ask any cold callers to produce identification, if they are legitimate they will not mind you checking their authenticity.

"You decide who you allow into your address, if you feel that someone is not genuine, do not let them in."

Anyone with information on the con men is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999.
