Pest control called to Conquest more than 60 times in last year to deal with vermin

Pest controllers have been called out to deal with vermin more than 60 times at the Conquest Hospital in the last year.

A dead rat was found near the children's creche in March and another outside the mortuary last August.

Wasps in the fracture clinic and flies in four different wards at the hospital in The Ridge were among 64 incidents recorded between May 2008 and May this year.

The figures were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act which showed pest controllers were called to the Conquest more times than any other hospital in Sussex over the period.

A spokesman for East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Conquest and Eastbourne's District General Hospital (DGH), said: "The use of pest control is a sign of good proactive management and the trust has robust procedures in place to deal with any pest problems.

"As part of our preventative approach, we employ an external specialised pest control company to undertake weekly inspections across our sites to avoid pest incidents. Therefore, the number of incidents at our hospitals may appear higher than other trusts.

"Successful pest control relies on early identification of potential problems and the number of incidents reflects our proactive approach.

"The number of incidents is not a reflection on cleanliness in our hospitals, more a recognition that we respond quickly to any problems.

"Visitors to our hospitals can help by disposing of their litter in an appropriate manner and by not dropping food debris in hospital grounds."
