A new convenience supermarket could be on its way to Haywards Heath.

Morrisons has submitted a premises licence application to Mid Sussex District Council to use The Mayflower pub site in America Lane.

The pub was sold in September 2012 by its owners Enterprise Inns.

A spokesperson for the company said: “As part of our ongoing business, we do from time to time identify a pub which is unable to deliver an appropriate level of sustainable income.

“After careful consideration, the decision was taken to sell the Mayflower; the pub therefore ceased trading in late September 2012 when it was sold to a third party.”

The licenclicensee application for the site is for a Morrisons M local convenience store rather than a large supermarket.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We’re excited to be bringing a Morrisons M local to Haywards Heath.

“Morrisons’ convenience stores give more space to fresh food, such as fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and baked goods and that fresh food is apparent as soon as the customer arrives at the store. ”

They added that is was too soon in the process to say when the store would open.

Jonathan Ash-Edwards, councillor for Heath Ward, Haywards Heath, said: “The Morrisons local will give a new lease of life to a run down and boarded up pub and offer more choice for shoppers in Haywards Heath.

“It’s another welcome sign that the town is open for business”.

The consultation period for representations ends on February, 12. Comments can be made by emailing licensing@midsus

Under planning rules changing a public house into a retail outlet doesn’t require planning permission.

However, there are two planning applications that have been submitted to the district council separate from the Morrisons licence application.

The applications were submitted at the beginning of January by Haywards Heath-based company JLR Investments and is looking for full planning approval.

It includes two flats on the first floor of the former pub with associated car parking.

The second application is for eight new houses; six two-bedroom terraced homes and two three-bedroom semi-detached homes at the back of the former pub.
