Police investigate ‘racist attack’
Police are investigating a reported racist attack in Burgess Hill.
They have confirmed after inquiries by the Mid Sussex Times that a man is on bail after being interviewed about the incident near the Fusion Bar in Church Road.
Sussex Police said: “Just after 7pm on Friday January 13 police received a report that a 22-year old Haywards Heath man had been assaulted whilst waiting at a bus stop in Church Road, Burgess Hill.
“Officers immediately went to the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man from Burgess Hill on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault.
“He was later released on police bail until February 11 while enquries continue.
“The victim, who was badly shaken by this unpleasant incident, but did not require hospital treatment, will be kept informed.
“Incidents of this type are rare in the area but detailed enquiries are being carried out. Let me know if any further query.
The victim told the Middy: “I was attacked violently and racially abused. I called the police and the man has been arrested.”
PC Stuart Streeter said: “Incidents of this type are rare in the area but detailed enquiries are being carried out. We would like anyone who saw what happened to contact is via 101 quoting serial 1406 of 13/1.”
