Proposal to freeze Mid Sussex parking charges

DRIVERS will have car parking charges frozen instead of increased if the opposition group on Mid Sussex District Council succeeds in a motion next week.

The Liberal Democrats on the Tory-controlled council are asking for charges to be kept unchanged until a review is completed.

But the success of their move depends on persuading some of the ruling Tories to vote with them.

The Liberal Democrats plan to plug the resulting gap of about 700,000 in the 2009-10 budget by making their own changes to the proposed budget.

Liberal group leader Graham Knight, from Burgess Hill, said details would not be revealed until the budget meeting on Wednesday, March 4, when a Liberal Democrat-run petition signed by hundreds of local people will also be presented.

Mr Knight said: "We think there is a different strategy available. By re-allocating money within the budget we get to a situation where the car parking increases are not necessary."

The charges relate to district council car parks in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.
