Network Rail has apologised for the disruption caused to passengers because of over-running maintenance work at Three Bridges.

A spokesman said: “Planned work to replace track overran by two hours until 4am on Monday morning despite already being scaled back to take the weather into consideration.

“As a result, snow and ice treatment trains were unable to fully treat the third rail which caused some delays to services.”

The icy conditions have caused major delays and cancellations on the Brighton Main line.

Southern is running an amended timetable today (Monday, January 21) and tomorrow (Tuesday, January 22).

The amended service is running between:

London and Brighton / Eastbourne / Hastings

London and Horsham / Arundel / Chichester / Portsmouth

London and Caterham / Tattenham Corner

Trains will NOT split or join at Haywards Heath or Horsham

In addition to the ameded timetable the following changes will apply until further notice:

No trains between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Replacement buses are in operation.

No trains between Redhill and Reigate. Replacement buses are in operation.

No trains between Horsham and Dorking. Replacement buses are in operation.

No trains between South Bermondsey and Streatham. Passengers are being accepted on London Buses, Tramlink and London Underground services on any reasonable routes.

No trains are running between Milton Keynes Central and South Croydon. Passengers should use services between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central, and between London Victoria and South Croydon.
