Residents’ joy as homes bid is refused by planners

Residents of a Haywards Heath road have said they are pleased plans to build three homes at the end of their cul-de-sac were refused by the North East Area Planning Committee.

The proposal was for the current property in St Edmund’s Road, called Mid Trees, to be demolished and replaced with three detached, two-bedroom homes.

A previous plan for the same site was for two pairs of two-bedroom, semi-detached properties. This was refused by Mid Sussex District Council planners in December.

The new plans were refused by planners last week on the grounds of over-development/intrusive and issues with traffic and parking.

One resident said: “We are very pleased with the outcome. The councillors were very critical of the Highways’ lack of foresight regarding potential safety issues which could be clearly seen from the picture evidence we submitted.”

A spokesman for the strategic planning division of West Sussex County Council had said: “This site was looked at very carefully and it was felt that whilst there is on-street parking, it was not considered to be detrimental to highway safety.”

Cllr Sujan Wickremaratchi, Haywards Heath town councillor for Ashenground ward, said: “This is a good victory for the residents, and I fully support the decision to refuse. Developers should always consult the residents before planning applications are submitted.”
