Retired firefighters in bid to rescue their Littlehampton homes

RETIRED firefighters who dedicated themselves to saving other people's lives and property now face a challenge they never expected – to rescue their own homes from destruction.

The Fire Fighters Charity has announced plans for a therapy centre on the site of its sheltered accommodation complex, Marine Court, in

Fitzalan Road, Littlehampton, where about 30 people live.

One resident, Ernie Adams, said: "This has upset a lot of people, people who thought they had a home for life. We thought this was it, that we would be carried out in a

box.

"Some of the other residents are in their late 80s and 90s, and all of them have health problems in one shape or form. I am probably one of

the youngest and fittest here, and I'm 62 with Parkinson's disease!"

A spokeswoman for the charity, which has therapy centres in Devon and Cumbria, said that it was simply looking into the possibility of converting the flats into a third such centre.

"To enable the charity to provide much-needed support to an additional 23 per cent of injured firefighters and their dependants, the board of trustees has decided to look at the proposal.

"Our prime concern, first and foremost, is to ensure the continuity and quality of care for its residents and we will, therefore, be working closely with the occupants and their families to support them with a move to a home of their choice."
