School places reprieve for parents

PARENTS at the centre of a row over school places are celebrating this week after the education authority stepped in to provide a temporary classroom.

The temporary classroom will provide an extra 15 pupil places at Hassocks Infants School.

Samantha Funnell, of Ockley Lane, said: "I've only just heard that we've got a place. We are really pleased – very happy."

One parent said the decision had 'restored his faith in local democracy'.

There was an outcry from angry parents after families were told their youngsters would be unable to go to the village school in September and instead have to travel to Burgess Hill or Albourne.

MP Nick Herbert and county councillors Colin Wilsdon and Peter Griffiths took up their cause after being contacted by angry parents.

The announcement on March 11 of a reprieve means 12 children within the catchment area and an additional three from outside can now go to the infants school.

Colin Wilsdon, who chairs West Sussex County Council's Schools Admission Forum, suggested 'parachuting in' a temporary classroom last week as a possible solution.

He told the Mid Sussex Times: "I am delighted. It's good news. I'm very pleased that the county council has responded and so are the parents."
