A new choir in Haywards Heath will hold a Best of British performance led by an international opera singer.

Coro Nuovo, a semi-professional choir made up of around 55 members, will put on a grand performance of British music at St Wilfrid’s Church on July 20.

The choir is led by the international tenor Andrew Rees who is an international performer.

Kate Kent, who leads the choir along side Mr Rees, said what made Coro Nuovo different from other choirs was that most of the singers were experienced in their own right as soloists and some were actively pursuing musical careers.

She said: “The other difference is that Andrew is passionate about supporting emerging musicians. The music business is cut-throat. Any exposure or help you can get from those ‘in the know’ is almost priceless.

“Coro Nuovo enables young musicians to feature in their concert programmes and also enables them to get mentoring and support – a huge boost to any musician’s CV. We hope to continue that support even when they are established.”

The Best of British concert will take place at 7.30pm. It will celebrate 500 years of British music with different tastes of the styles and genres that make British music so popular.

Kate said: “We are very fortunate in Sussex to have some terrific musicians – some on the world stage – living locally. Coro Nuovo is keen to encourage and harness talent and at the same entertain audiences with high quality singing.

“We look forward to welcoming our guest, the High Sheriff of Sussex Mr Jonathan Lucas and other VIPs. “

Talented 19-year-old cellist - Kieran Carter, from Horsham, will be playing part of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Kieran will take up a scholarship at the Royal College of Music in the autumn.

This season the choir welcomed 15 new singers. Kate said it planned to hold a master class which will be open up to the public to watch.

She said Coro also hoped to hold a competition for musicians who were hoping to move towards a professional career.

She said they would like to award a bursary to enable a talented performer to have the financial support to attend auditions and get a professional CD made.
