THE official opening of Southern’s first ever indoor cycle hub at Haywards Heath has highlighted a raft of on-going improvements at the station.

Councillor John Sabin was joined by Southern’s Managing Director at the official opening on Wednesday (February 9).

The £300,000 project has transformed bicycle and motorcycle parking at the station, with 300 new cycle spaces and 100 new motorcycle spaces in the car park, 160 of which have been installed in a former car valet building.

The Cycle hub is part of a raft of improvements that have already been made at the station, including new waiting rooms and toilets.

Work has also started to double-deck part of the car park which will increase capacity by 120 spaces.

The work is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Also planned for the station is work to: redesign and improve the booking hall; improve the main subway and provide better lighting; replace stair treads, improve signage; update customer information systems; paint areas that need attention and install a clear glass windbreak to the platforms.

Inside the former car valet building, there are a range of facilities for cyclists: two-tier parking for 160 bicycles, secure lockers, a changing room and toilets.

For an annual subscription of £120, cyclists will have access to all the facilities plus a key-card which will allow them exclusive entry. The new facility is also covered by CCTV which is beamed back to Southern’s 24-hour CCTV Control centre at Croydon.

In addition, cyclists can use a Help Point for information and assistance and can also view train departures from a flat-screen monitor.

Outside, there is free parking for 140 cycles and up to 100 motorcycles.
