Spam fritters to celebrate Land Army work

CORNED beef hash and spam fritters turned the clock back as staff and residents celebrated the work of the Women's Land Army where it all began.

A celebration lunch was held at Balcombe Place Care Home at Balcombe.

Balcombe Place has a very special connection with the land army as it was used as its headquarters and it was from there that Lady Denman organised its setting up for work in both world wars.

Col Richard Putnam CBE, TE, DL, one of the deputy lord lieutenants of West Sussex, joined in an authentic lunch of corn beef hash and spam fritters.

In his speech to the residents, Col Putnum thanked all the women who not only worked the land but did other valuable war work.
