Station death; new development.
A man who died at a station has been named.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission confirmed he was Ernestas Anikinas, 33, from Lithuania. His family has been informed.
He died at Gatwick railway station on February 8 from awlf-inflicted wounds from a broken bottle.
An independent investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Mr Anikinas’ death. At around 2.50am Sussex Police was contacted by airport staff who were concerned for Mr Anikinas’ welfare as he appeared to be acting strangely.
Officers attended and spoke to Mr Anikinas and took him to Gatwick railway station ticket office. Officers left the ticket office area but returned shortly after 3.30am following a report Mr Anikinas was self-harming with a broken bottle sustaining serious neck injuries.
First aid was administered by police officers, who deployed a Taser to restrain Mr Anikinas.
Paramedics and airport staff also attempted first aid at the scene but Mr Anikinas was pronounced dead in the ambulance before arriving at East Surrey Hospital.
A post mortem has been carried out and further work is being undertaken by the pathologist to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The coroner has been informed and an inquest is due to be opened.
Mr Anikinas had been working in north Lincolnshire for a short period and it is believed he had travelled to Gatwick to try to fly back to Lithuania.
The IPCC has been in contact with Mr Anikinas’ family to offer our condolences, and has met with a family representative to explain our role and how the independent investigation will progress.
