Students make a date with career opportunities
Students at the careers session
Speed dating is catching on fast but how about career dating?
Year nine students at Oathall Community College in Haywards Heath made a date with twenty-six different professionals from around West Sussex and spent a morning chatting to them all by moving from one table to the next with a list of quick fire questions.
The students formed into groups of five and chatted to computer animators, doctors, publishers, scientists and airline engineers to name but a few.
Patrick Woodington, an aircraft engineer from Virgin Atlantic Airways, said: “This sort of experience would
have made a huge difference to me when I was at school. I think that being able to get this type of insight into different types of employment opportunites is invaluable.”
Patricia Hegarty, an editorial director at Caterpillar Book Publishers, added: “Having an opportunity to create an awareness of my profession was very rewarding. It was clear that many students hadn’t considered the myriad of opportunities in the publishing industry and hopefully now a handful may consider it as an option.”
