Suitors needed for ambitious play

A rare operetta by the English composer Arthur Sullivan is the latest ambitious project being taken on by thespians in Mid Sussex.

But the merry band of performers who constitute Balcombe's Victory Players are short of a youthful baritone and a tenor to play the suitors of its two leading ladies.

Musical director Douglas Wragg said: "The trouble is the men in our troupe are of the wrong age to play characters with love interests in the female characters in the piece."

The two suitors appear in the comic operetta The Zoo.

Mr Wragg said: "This piece has been rarely performed and is therefore going to be a challenge because nowbody knows it. However, it is also going to be fun because that has always been the reason for everything we do at the Victory Players, as far as I am concerned."

Auditions for The Zoo will be held by Mr Wragg on September 11 at 7.45pm at the Victory Hall in Balcombe with the operetta being performed on November 19 to 24.
