Transplant survivors host cocktail party

Two ladies from Burgess Hill whose lives have been changed forever thanks to organ transplants, have set up a summer party for charity.

Sarah Jones, 41, and Katie Foster, 44, from Burgess Hill, will host a Red Hot Life Giving Summer Party at Mid Sussex Golf Club, in Ditchling, on August 24.

Katie had a double organ transplant in April this year and Sarah had a kidney transplant in 2006.

They will be raising funds for Live Life Then Give Life which promotes organ donation and raises funds for organ transplant research.

Katie was diabetic for 27 years which caused her kidneys to fail meaning she eventually had to have a kidney and pancreas transplant. She waited on the donor list for two years.

She said: “The most frustrating thing is when you’re on the list, not knowing when the call’s going to come.

“It could be any time day or night and you have to go straight to the hospital.

“The transplant will stop any further diabetic related complications therefore allowing me to live a normal life.

“It’s the gift of life and if you can give what more could you do? I’m very grateful and feel privileged I’ve been able to have this transplant.”

Sarah had her kidney transplant after being kept on the waiting list for five years.

During that time she had to connect herself up to her dialysis machine for 4.5 hours three times a week.

She said: “I was told the average waiting time was three years, but it all depends on blood type and match.

“I was running out of places to dialysis from - because you dialysis through needles in your veins - when I received the call.

“We both owe our lives to the generosity of two families whom at their darkest moments carried out their relatives wishes and agreed for their organs to be donated allowing others to live.”

Sarah is now an advocate LLTGL.

Each year, 1,000 people in the UK die awaiting an organ transplant. More than 10,000 seriously ill people are currently waiting for an organ transplant and many more require tissue transplants.

The Red Hot Life Giving Summer Party will be a cocktail party with food, dancing and a raffle. Local businesses are also invited to sponsor the event or provide prizes for the raffle.
