Tribute to Handcross man killed in Burgess Hill accident
fatal rtc between Burgess Hill and Ansty 27/01/2013
A 20-year-old from Handcross who died when his car hit a tree has been described as a ‘smashing lad’ by a relative.
Jay Ansell, of Truggers, Handcross died after his car hit a tree in the early hours of Sunday (January 27) morning.
His car was found by the side of the B2036 between Ansty and Burgess Hill.
The Volkswagen Golf was spotted by another driver shortly after 3.30am, but police believe that the crash may have happened some time before that.
Mr Ansell was sadly found dead in the wreckage.
Sergeant Stewart Goodwin from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said: “The vehicle had cooled down when we arrived, so I believe that it could have left the road some time earlier. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the car off the B2036 Cuckfield Road at any time before 3.30am.”
Soon after the crash people laid touching floral tributes to Jay at the scene of his death.
One read: “Dear Jay Rest In Peace. Look down with the Angels. Creaghan.” Other tributes were paid on social media.
Jay’s great uncle Ken Ansell said earlier this week that the immediate family was too distressed to publicly comment on the tragedy.
Mr Ansell, of London Road, Handcross said Jay had been working as a litter picker with SITA and added:”He was hoping to work his way up the ladder. He was the sort of person who could start at the bottom and work his way up. He was a very nice lad and I don’t say that lightly. It’s such a tragedy.
He didn’t need to be asked to do anything for anyone; he was the salt of the earth. He used to help do my mother in law’s garden and he never had to
be asked. I don’t know the full facts about the crash but from what was said about the state of the car I don’t think he was laying there suffering. He was so well liked; the family are devastated.”
An inquest will be held at a future date once a report has been sent to the West Sussex Coroner.
Police have requested that anyone who saw the car driving in the area or off the road where it crashed to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Southcott or e-mail collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk
