Police have given an update on the conditions of the three people seriously injured in the multi-vehicle crash on the Cuckfield bypass yesterday (Wednesday).

The accident closed the A272 between the B2036 High Street junction and the B2184 Broad Street junction from just after 8.30am to 5.30pm with traffic congestion and diversions resulting.

The vehicles involved were a Ford van, a BMW and a Toyota Rav4.

This morning Sussex Police said the 33-year-old male van driver from Haywards Heath was still in a potentially life-threatening condition.

He has been transferred to Hurstwood Park Hospital in Haywards Heath with serious head and other injuries.

A 56-year-old woman from Guildford, who was the driver of the BMW, is also in a serious condition - assessed as potentially life-threatening - with fractures. She is being treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Her 50-year-old male passenger from Romford, Essex, is also in a serious condition at the same hospital although his condition is currently asssessed as not potentially life threatening

Finally, the 30-year-old male driver of a Toyota RAV4 was treated for minor injuries at RSCH. He is from Horsham. Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.50am on Wednesday. The van had rolled on to its side. All the victims were initially taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

A considerable amount of debris and vehicle fluids had to be cleared from the road prior to it being reopened.

Crash investigators have examined the scene, but there is no confirmation at this stage whether the morning’s wintry conditions contributed to the collision.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or any events leading up to it.
