More details have emerged about the roadworks that are delaying drivers on the A272 trunk road around Haywards Heath.
Utilities provider, Gas Transportation Company (GTC), is installing 900m of high voltage cable through the A272 Haywards Heath area to maintain and supply existing and new developments.
The work has been scheduled in excess of 18 months but due to the level of major works throughout the wider network and the duration of the works, September 2013 was the earliest date available.
It is anticipated that the work will take until the end of November, although GTC says every effort is being made to speed up and to cause the least disruption possible.
West Sussex County Council says the traffic management required to enable the works is varied and will involve intermittent use of 24-hour four-way and two-way temporary lights, manually controlled throughout to minimise disruption.
As works progress lane closures and road closures with a small diversion will be required at the Muster Green / South Road roundabout. This phase will be done at weekends to minimise week day peak traffic disruption.
The county council says that other traffic management alternatives were investigated. These included night works, which were rejected due to environmental noise issues; off peak working, rejected due to the amount of extra time required to complete works and method of installation requiring open excavations having to be protected for safety reasons; plating of excavations was viewed not viable due to the volume of traffic and safety.
However, extra resources have been agreed in advance with extended working hours being implemented including weekends to enable works to progress as quickly and as safely as possible.
The county council says it is in regular communication with GTC to ensure delivery of scheme.

The A272 disruption is the latest large scale work to affect Haywards Heath and its surrounds.
Currently, work is also taking place in Rocky Lane to widen the road to accomodate traffic from new housing and as part of the Haywards Heath bypass project, which will eventually link to Bolnore Village.
Similarly, the B2184 London Lane, Cuckfield is closed while work is carried out on “drainage investigation and pipe repair”. The closure is causing major disruption in the Cuckfield area with school buses and commuter traffic trying to squeeze through the high street.
