Sussex Police have given an update on the gas main fire in Lindfield High Street.
A statement said a gas pipe ruptured and caught fire in roadworks on the B2028 opposite All Saints Church, Lindfield at about 1.20pm today (Monday 10 February).
The road is already closed because of the roadworks and the fire service and works contractors are dealing with the incident.
Police said: “People have left one adjacent property as a precaution for the time being. The pipe is in a controlled works area and the risk to any other members of the public is assessed as low.
“There is no further police involvement.”
At first it was thought that five properties had been evacuated as a precaution because of the potential danger of escaping gas.
However, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was still in attendance at 4.30pm, more than three hours after the initial emergency call.
At this later stage, crews from Haywards Heath were liaising with the gas network operators and UK Power Networks to isolate supplies before standing down from the incident.
The B2028 Lindfield High Street is currently closed to through traffic while South East Water fits a new 2.2km pieline to serve the village.
