Burglaries in Mid Sussex have risen by 125 per cent over the past ninety days, compared with the same period last year.

There have been more than sixty house burglaries since September and police have stepped up house to house enquiries and patrols.

Rachel Mundy, the Neighbourhood Police Sergeant based at Burgess Hill, said: “Burglary from dwellings is the big issue across Mid Sussex. At one point we had six different series of burglaries - in other words, different modes of burglary.”

Sgt Mundy was speaking at a West Sussex County Council Local Committee meeting in Burgess Hill on Thursday evening. She said officers had made significant arrests but one mode of burglary remains a problem - officers are concentrating their crack-down on burglars who have been targeting properties between 1pm and 8pm.

Sgt Mundy said: “They are targeting properties in the daylight, looking to see if they look empty or dark and going round to the back. They have stolen jewellery and cash but we’ve also had lap-tops taken.”

In a Sussex Police press release issued earlier this month, Detective Inspector Tanya Jones said: “It is important for residents to make sure their properties look like they have someone at home.

“We always encourage people to leave lights on or use timers so they come on if they are not at home. Don’t make it easy for burglars to know you are not in. Use security lights which are activated by movement to light up the outside of your property and make sure all your external doors are properly secured with extra locks.

“If you see something which isn’t right or people acting suspiciously in your area please call the police and report it. You know what is out of place in your road.”

One of the latest break-ins was at a property on Paddockhurst Road in Turners Hill on January 8 between 10am and 6.30pm. An untidy search made of the house and electrical items and jewellery were stolen.
